The Mahjong Pong Rules

Introduction

In Mahjong, an important move you can make is called “Pong.” So, what does that mean? If one of the other three players at the table discards a tile, and you have two identical tiles in your hand, you can declare a “Pong.”

When you declare a Pong, you take the discarded tile and lay down all three identical tiles face up on the table. This shows everyone that you have completed a set. After that, you’ll need to discard one of your less important tiles to finish the process.

Definition

A Pong is formed when a player has three identical tiles.

Claiming a Pong

If any player discards a tile that matches two tiles already in your hand, you can declare a Pong. To do this, you must immediately reveal your three matching tiles and place them face up on the table. After that you should discard a tail to keep your total tiles of 13.

Tiles in your hand

When another player discard a 1 Character, you just say “Pong”, take it to your side, and discard a tile what you don’t need.

Say it, Pong!

Take this 1 Character and put all three tiles face up on the table beside you

Do you know? If next time you draw another 1 character, you can declare a Kong. But be cafeful, maybe someone is wating for Robbing.

Remember, after declare a Pong, you should discard a tile, it’s different with declare a Kong, which declare a Kong need to draw another tile to refill but not Pong. Otherwise, you won’t be able to have a chance to win, because you have an extra tile more to match the rule 4 sets and 1 pair.

Turn Order

After declaring a Pong, you will take your turn as usual, drawing a tile from the wall and then discarding one tile from your hand.

Strategic Use

Declaring a Pong can help you move closer to completing your hand, but it also reveals part of your strategy to your opponents.

Specific rule

If a player discards a tile that matches two tiles in your hand, you have the opportunity to declare a Pong. If you decide not to claim it at that time, you forfeit that chance. If the same tile is discarded again by another player in the following turns, you cannot claim it as a Pong. Once you have drawn a tile, if another player discards a tile that you can use to form a Pong, you can then declare it again.
